Tough times do not last.

Push Through Valleys

One of the interviews that I have done was with a man named Ron Glosser. He ran a little company you might’ve heard of called Hershey Chocolate. I asked him what the difference was between the people who come out on top and those who do not. He said something very profound:

“Successful people never make their major life-changing decisions when they are in their valleys.”

I asked him what this meant and Ron said,

“If you think about it, everything is cyclical. You have ups and you have downs. When you have your down periods, like when you are sick, getting a divorce, getting laid off, going bankrupt, or the economy is tanking, how could you make a life-changing decision framed from your lowest point in life?”

Ron mentioned that because everything is cyclical, it is alright to have a low point every once in awhile. What you can do at a low point is push through and ride out the storm until you begin to rise again. When you feel that upswing, or that shift where things start going in your direction again, make a decision then and you will save over 10 years of your life of having to go back and correct the wrong choices you made at your lowest point. This is because those wrong decisions were all based on negative emotions.

What You Can Do

One of the ways to make sure you are consistently making the right decisions is to focus on the positive mindset of what you can do rather than focusing on what you can’t do. You may look at a situation and go through all the possibilities of why you can’t do something or complete a task. This may be what you can’t do, but what can you do?

When you surround yourself with positive emotions and you are focused on what youcan do, you can then figure out every necessary path you need to take in order to achieve the goals you want. When you believe in your own ability to do things, you can do more things.

Your Environment Matters

Thinking positive, focusing on the opportunities you can take advantage of, and your decision-making skills are greatly affected by your environment. It is crucial you surround yourself with people who emanate positivity and challenge you to grow and take on new challenges. The decisions and actions you take will be greatly influenced by those you surround yourself with.

Change Lives by not Giving Up

How Re/Max came to be

You might not know his name directly, but Dave Liniger, Co-Founder of the giant real estate corporation Re/Max, shared a great story with me about not giving in when things got rough.

One day I sat him down and asked him to tell me his story because back in the day he wanted to get into the real estate industry and I was curious if it was easy.

In the 1970’s during the other economic collapse, he went headfirst into something that most people were running from.

He said during the first two years, every phone call that came in was from a bill collector because all of the company’s funding ran out. He said that he was so embarrassed when the phone would ring, that he would run across the hall and pick it up so his secretary was not put on the spot.

By the third year it got even worse when they threw him in jail because they called Liniger a liar, a cheat, and a fraud.

I asked Dave Liniger what he did and he said he took his attitude from trying to prove the entire world wrong to something more admirable and to prove himselfright.

He knew and believed that he was not what others were making him out to be. He had the courage to pick up the phone and call the bill collectors back to tell them he was going to be honest that he did not have the $50,000 to pay them back, and he was sorry. He told them he had $50 in his pocket and he would send it to them that day along with a promise that he wouldn’t quit.

Liniger said, “Don’t give up on me, I won’t give up on my dream.”

He told me he called every bill collector every month until the fourth year when someone finally believed in him and bought their first franchise. That is the story of how Re/Max was made.

The thing that stuck out most to me was that he said, “I am a regular guy and I am unimportant, but how many people’s lives were changed because I would not quit? More importantly, how do we know that someone else who has the next American dream is not about to throw in the towel right now because a bill collector is on their other line?”

“Don’t give up on me, I won’t give up on my dream.”

It may take a day, months, or even years more until you find your next breakthrough success, but do not give up when it gets tough. Success is just around the corner if you keep pushing, but also recognize when those around you go through tough times so you can be the one to help them through.

This is a reason why the biggest companies bring me out to speak at their events. Find Your Success Through Association!

The first mentor I ever had in personal development was a guy named Charlie “Tremendous” Jones – a legend!

He has a great quote where he says, "You are the same today as you will be in five years except for two things: The people you meet and the books you read."

By this he means that your growth and success depend on who you hang out with and what you put in your head because these both help determine your character as a person. How true is that?

Who, and what, do you associate with?

I would like to take that even one step further and have you understand this: We are a direct reflection of the five people we hang around the most right now. Our attitude, income, and lifestyle are the exact average of that group. Take a look around and see who you associate with the most and think about how each person affects your life.

Back in high school if you hung around the smoking section, who were you? A smoker. If you were around the jocks you were most likely a jock as well. The same thing applies to your life today.

This same concept also applies to something I did a few years ago. I decided and followed through with climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the Roof of Africa!

People would ask how in the world I could go from sea level in La Jolla, California to all the way up there. I told them it was simple because I applied the wisdom I am sharing to you right now in this article.

I got on the Internet and looked up the most successful Sherpa – the people that had climbed and summited three or four hundred times. They are the people I hired to help me and guess what happened!

Everywhere they put their boot, I put my boot print in the exact same spot. I knew that they were going to make it to the top, but if I veered off and tried my own road, they probably would be carrying me down in a body bag.

Higher Standards Make Champions

No matter where I have gone in this world, there is one thing I have found that people have in common: Everyone has a story to tell.

One of my favorite stories all time came from an unlikely source: Evander Holyfield. Remember the heavyweight champion boxer?

I asked him what made him so special and how he won more heavyweight championships than anyone else in history. He told me it was easy because he had ahigher standard.

He said, “If you have a car and you will not tolerate it running bad or being dirty, you have a higher standard. The chances are that you also have a better car than your next-door neighbor.” In sports he said he showed up early, left late, he even invented his own exercises, and he had the highest standard that led him to winning more championships than anyone else.

He asked, “Where would you be outside the ring, whether you are a pet groomer, stock broker, or an insurance sales executive, if you had a higher standard compared to your competition?”

I saw his point and asked him, “But to be honest, didn’t it hurt being in a fight?”

He said it hurt badly, but when you are in the fight you do not focus on the pain or the punches you take. Once you do focus on the pain, where do you think you end up? On your back, knocked out. That is what people do outside of the ring.

People focus on the gas prices, the war, and the economy, and they wonder why they never became a champion in their own quest.

He pulled me in close and said,

“Do you know what the funny thing is? When you do win the championship, everyone comes to your feet and they chant your name. They raise your hand in victory and the guy puts a big shiny belt around your waist. At that moment, you do not feel even oneof the punches you took along the journey. The guy in the losing locker room however, is going to feel every bruise as he wishes he had a higher standard.”

What is the One Thing You Need that Determines Your Success?

Would you like to know the single most important step toward all personal achievement success?

Of course you would, and it comes down to one word. Those who actually apply and live according to this message are the people that separate themselves from the 95% who just dream of success, to join the top 5% that actually achieve it. I am talking about success financially, prosperity, relationships, health and wellness, and more. What is that word?


That’s right, confidence! If you do not believe that you deserve to be successful, the chances are you will not be. That is why if you Google lottery winners who lose their money, you will see that the majority end up right back to where they were after a short period of time. Why was that?

They did not believe that they deserved to have that success that was thrown on them. Also, you often see these sports icons who get the multimillion dollar contracts and a few years later they are right back where they begin. Why?

Again, they did not believe that they actually deserved to have that.

Those that actually believe in themselves will ultimately achieve success. The easiest way to improve your confidence is to start faking it until you make it. You have heard that cliché 1000 times, but it is true! Consistently making sure your confidence level is healthy is a big part in creating success.

Most of us have seen the video on the internet of the little girl standing in the mirror telling herself she is great and special. Give yourself daily motivational pep talks like that! If you keep doing that and saying that to yourself over and over, eventually you become just that! It is a simple process.

Yes, there will always be small forces that try to bring your confidence down to their level occasionally. The fact is though, that by reading this it means that you are ready and destined to have something great coming to you soon.

The question now becomes: Are you ready to accept it?

Good Enough Never Is – Seek People Who Cheer for Greatness

One of my favorite interviews I did when writing the book, 3 Feet from Gold, was with a woman named Debbie Fields. I am sure you have either heard of, or had, Mrs. Fields Cookies at one point in time!

During the interview, Debbie told me this great quote: “Good enough never is.”

This is similar to when we want to stretch the truth, or we just want to cut corners. There is a high chance that doing so will not give us the best value we need, or can have, in our lives.

Better Than “Good Enough”

Debbie told me a great story about herself at the age of 14 when she was sitting around the dinner table refusing to eat her mother’s cooking. Her mother asked if she is going to eat the food in front of her, to which to she replied “no.”

In doing so, Fields’s mother would not let her leave the dinner table until she finished the meal in front of her. After a few hours, she was asked if she was then going to eat the food. Debbie replied “no.”

Midnight rolls around and once again she is asked if she is going to finish her food. Again, Debbie says “no.” After hearing this, Debbie’s mother said she was never going to cook for her ever again.

The next day, Debbie went to the store with all of her babysitting money and bought ingredients to start cooking for her family. She whipped up a batch of cookies, everyone loved them, and at the age of 19 she opened up her first franchise called, “Mrs. Fields Cookies.” Her mother’s cooking was just good enough and that was not acceptable for Fields so she took action and did better.

The Two Sides in Our Lives

In the interview, when I mentioned to Debbie that her mother was basically a role model to her and was an inspiration for her, she kind of agreed. Initially her mother had told her not to open up the business because she would look like an idiot, she was a woman, and she was going to fail.

At that moment she learned a concept that applies to each of us. On one side of our lives we have a cheering section that consists of the people that are going to root us on and tell us every single reason why we will succeed.

On the other side there is a jeering section which boos us, rains on our parade and tells us to just be good enough by not taking risk for our dreams. It is up to us as individuals to stand in between these two sides and decide which group to listen to. Are you choosing the cheers or the jeers?

Ultimately the choice is up to us.

Goals Will Not Be Met Without These Two Things

A dream is just a dream until it comes true and only then does it become a reality. How do you make your dream become your reality?

Goal Clarity

A goal written down becomes a plan. Because a plan backed by action makes your dreams come true, it is imperative to have a crystal clear picture of what it is that you actually want.

Is impossible to get to a finish line until you know where, and what, the finish line is. Just like an archer with a bow and arrow claiming how great she is at archery, only until the archer has a target to shoot at will you be able to tell if she is on track to proving her talent in archery.

This applies to our daily living as well. We have to know if we are on track by having a clear and precise picture of what it is that we are seeking.

The key to setting these precise goals is to break them down into bite-sized pieces. Brian Tracy did a book a few years ago called, Eat the Frog, and there is also a similar story that explains you can eat an entire whale one bite at a time. Both of these concepts are very true! By breaking down our goals and creating a clear vision of what we want, we can track our progress of how well we are working toward our dreams.

Action with Purpose

A clear goal is what you need to start your journey of success, but you need to still follow it up with action. If you are waiting for someone to tell you to get out of bed, show up to work, or tell you when you can go to the bathroom or eat your lunch, then the chances are high that you are not moving toward the destiny you feel you are deemed for on Earth.

There are ways you can train yourself to create this personal, internal initiative. You need to make sure your confidence and inspiration grow in order to take you from where you are sitting to where you want to go. You can fake it until you make it, you can talk yourself into facing your fears and pursuing your passions, and you can surround yourself with people who bring the best out in you while pushing you toward your goals.
